Hon. Pius Opoku, the Municipal Chief Executive for Tano North, has intensified the fight against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, following a major anti-galamsey inspection exercise at Adegyemim in the Ahafo Region.

The operation, led by Hon. Pius Opoku, brought together key government and security officials, including the Ahafo Regional Minister, Hon. Alhaji Collins Dauda, Hon. Charity Gardiner, the Municipal Chief Executive for Tano South, the Regional Police Commander, members of the Regional Intelligence and Security Committee (REGSEC), the Blue Water Guards, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and other stakeholders.

During the inspection, several illegal mining activities were uncovered, leading to the destruction of mining equipment and materials at the site. Authorities also seized two excavators and one bulldozer, which were towed away for further investigations.

However, the suspected galamsey operators reportedly fled the area before security personnel could effect any arrests.

Speaking after the exercise, Hon. Pius Opoku reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to combating illegal mining and protecting the environment from destruction.

He stressed that the Tano North Municipal Assembly, in collaboration with security agencies and stakeholders, would continue to intensify operations against illegal miners to safeguard water bodies, farmlands, and natural resources within the municipality.

The inspection forms part of ongoing nationwide efforts aimed at curbing illegal mining activities and promoting environmental sustainability.
