Berekum Stool Dispute Resolved as Otumfuo Oversees Nomination Process

A longstanding dispute surrounding the nomination of a new chief for the vacant male stool in Berekum was officially resolved on May 19, 2026, under the supervision of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

The resolution process, held at the Manhyia Palace, addressed concerns raised by some kingmakers who initially failed to attend the nomination meeting. The absentees cited reasons including travel commitments, short notice, and concerns over the atmosphere surrounding the process.

Additional grievances were also raised regarding the handling of royal eligibility by the Queen. In response, the Asantehene intervened to ensure fairness and transparency by expanding the list of nominees to four qualified candidates.

Following deliberations, the Queen selected Kofi Asante from among the nominees to occupy the stool. The kingmakers who were absent later confirmed that they had no objections to the decision, paving the way for the enstoolment process to commence.

Addressing the gathering, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II advised the nominee to remain humble and called on supporters of unsuccessful candidates to exercise patience and respect the final decision. He emphasized that the stool could only be occupied by one individual at a time and urged all parties to prioritize unity and peace.

The Asantehene further stressed that the outcome of the process should not be viewed in terms of winners or losers, but rather as a victory for peace and stability within the Traditional Area. He also cautioned against any attempts to undermine the customs and traditions of Berekum once the new chief is formally enstooled.

The resolution process concluded with the symbolic smoking of the peace pipe as grievances were settled and all parties embraced the nominee, signaling the restoration of harmony in the Berekum Traditional Area.
